Hedgehogs are our Neighbours too!

In Neighbourhood Watch we tend to think about people and property, but our Neighbourhood includes much more than this. Wild animals are our neighbours too and they need our help!

We all recognise a hedgehog but did you know that they are declining in numbers faster than the tiger worldwide?

If you want to find out how to make a difference take a look at the superb Hedgehog Street web site which is full of advice and ideas to help our hedgehogs.

Wildlife in Whittlesey

In spite of continued development there are areas of Whittlesey rich in wildlife. These sanctuaries are often in unexpected places, many are on disused land which used to be industrial or in our gardens. Animals are amazingly adept at hiding their precence and so go un-noticed. Here are two pictures taken recently of animals that are regular visitors. Keep looking you may spot them too!

Fraudulent Pet Sales

Action Fraud has noticed a rise in reports concerning the purchase of pets, in particular puppies, advertised for sale via popular online auction websites.

The fraudsters will place an advert of the pet for sale, claiming to have recently moved abroad and the need to re-home the puppies.

Once a sale is agreed and payment is made, usually by money transfer or bank transfer, the pet does not materialise. The fraudster will usually ask for further advanced payments for courier charges, shipping fees or vet bills.

Ways to Protect Yourself

Stay within the auction guidelines. Be wary of paying fees via a Money Service Bureau, such as MoneyGram and Western Union.

Consider conducting research on other information provided by the seller; for example a mobile phone number or email address used by the seller could alert you to any negative information associated with this number online.

Request details of the courier company being used and conduct enquiries regarding the company

Agree a suitable time to meet face to face to agree the purchase.

Be wary. If you think the purchase price is too good to be true then this is probably an indication that it is!

If you believe that you have been a victim of fraud you can report it online at http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud or by telephone on 0300 123 2040.

Clean up after your Dog

There are about ten million dogs in the UK, producing around one million tonnes of faeces each year, so it's no wonder dog-fouling is the most offensive type of litter on our streets and is constantly rated by the public as one of the most important issues affecting their local area.

There is an increasing trend  to introduce more areas where dogs are banned. This is gaining increasing support amongst the public, fuelled by the very small minority of irresponsible owners who do not clean up after their dog.

Please remember to clean up after your dog.
