Tips to Combat Cybercrime

Fraud Alert

With cybercrime attempts becoming more common and more sophisticated it is very important to ensure that your computer is well protected.

 

  • Three simple tips are:
    Make sure your anti-virus and anti-malware software is installed, updated and active.
    Create varied passwords and change them regularly.
    Update your operating system and software when prompted.

People of all ages can be victims of cyber-crime, but 40 -79 year-olds have been highlighted as the most at risk.

 

  • Commonly reported issues are:
    The Con – a victim is called by someone pretending to be from a reputable company and then convinced to allow the fraudster remote access to their computer.
    Ransomware attacks – there are different types of ransomware. However, all of them will prevent you from using your computer normally. They will all ask you to do something before you can use your PC normally, typically to pay money (a ransom). Even if the ransom is paid there is no guarantee that paying the fine or doing what the ransomware tells you will give access to your PC or files again.
  • Phishing – emails or pop up windows that may entice you to click a link to find out more about a prize or discount which actually allows malicious software to be downloaded on to your computer.

 

  • Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments or emails from people you don't know or companies you don't do business with.
  • Regularly backup your important files.
  • Remember:
  • Never hand over your personal details or send money via the phone or internet unless you’re sure the request is genuine.
  • If you’re not sure, say that you’ll contact them later. Look for their number or web address yourself, don’t use the caller’s number or details and make sure.
  • If it was a phone call make sure that the phoneline is not still connected to the caller. Use a different phone if you can, or wait 5 to 10 minutes after the cold call if using the same phone - just in case they waited on the line.
  • If you are suspicious and think it may be fake, or you think you have been the victim of online fraud, contact Action Fraud online or call 0300 123 2040. Alternatively report the matter to the police online or via 101.
